Chris is a very well-known and popular artist and tutor from Dorking, Surrey. He has been a professional painter for 35 years, and a tutor for 25 years and specialises in working in acrylics, watercolour, and mixed-media. He favours landscape, coastal and architectural subjects – specifically in capturing atmosphere and fleeting moments of changing light. The close proximity of The North Downs to his home and studio are a constant source of inspiration, and he paints and sketches the landscape there regularly.
His main preoccupation is with atmosphere, light and weather, and he endeavours to capture the fleeting changes and how it affects the scene before him. The use of dynamic composition, texture and expressive mark-making while leaving some areas as vague abstraction enables the viewer use their imagination. He prefers to work in the studio from location sketches and photographs, mostly in water-based media.

His book, Mixed-Media Landscapes and Seascapes was published in 2020 through Batsford.
