Course Description

We are delighted to welcome David Poxon RI for this two-day watercolour masterclass this May. David is known the world over for the precision and craftmanship of his pure watercolour paintings. He specialises in pure watercolour, and is a Watercolour Master. His paintings can take many weeks to make with multiple layers of transparent paint each one modifying the colours beneath. He has developed special techniques over the years to portray the illusions of texture, depth, and tonal contrast. His subject material features the overlooked, the abandoned, and discarded, and the passage of time and the magical effects it creates are incorporated into David’s paintings. He is an elected member of the exclusive Royal Institute, and also the National Watercolour Society of America. He has won many awards and is frequently invited to exhibit worldwide in Master watercolour exhibitions. David Poxon is also a popular and trusted judge for International Art Competitions and is the organiser of the very prestigious International Watercolour Masters Exhibitions. He is the author of two best selling drawing books, and his latest book – Watercolour Heart & Soul – is available on Amazon or through his website.

This workshop is perfect for watercolour enthusiasts keen to learn David’s method of creating richly coloured, textured watercolour paintings. Renowned for his meticulous multi-glazing technique, David applies numerous layers of transparent paint, each subtly enhancing the colours beneath, without using any white paint, instead, choosing to preserve areas of the natural paper.

During this immersive workshop, you will focus on aged objects and weathered surfaces like metal and wood. David will guide you step-by-step, providing reference materials and expert instruction to help you achieve depth of colour and intricate textures. You’ll gain valuable skills, including how to build layers of colour without muddiness, and explore a variety of tools and techniques to create dynamic effects.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, David’s hands-on teaching style ensures personalized attention for every participant. Over two relaxed and enjoyable days, you’ll cover foundational practices, layering and glazing techniques for tonal depth, and advanced methods to add texture and atmosphere. David will also share time-saving shortcuts to streamline your creative process, from initial inspiration to a completed painting. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a globally acclaimed artist whose workshops are all about practical teaching and expert advice. Join us for two days of creativity, inspiration, and growth in a supportive and fun atmosphere. All reference materials will be provided, and you’ll leave equipped to apply these enriching techniques to your own watercolour practice.

Suitable for all levels of experience. Don’t miss this chance to elevate your art with David Poxon!
