Seascapes in Oils with Andrew Barrowman

Course Description

Andrew will teach you how to paint seascapes in an alla prima (one session) technique which can then be used in plein-air painting. You will cover colour mixing, composition and simplifying a seascape, brush techniques and many other painting ideas that arise as you work.

Andrew will start the day with an introduction to seascape painting, where he will show you examples of his work. He will discuss which colour palette is most appropriate for seascape painting, and what other materials are important. You will try some colour-mixing exercises and discuss composition and when to crop a photo for better composition. You will then do some warm-up painting exercises where you can develop your compositions and try out ideas before painting your main paintings.

Andrew will paint a demo painting at regular intervals during the day where he will show you techniques and how colours chosen can work together.

There will be lots of one-to-one advice as Andrew circulates around the studio. The aim is to paint one or two paintings during the day.
