Course Description

A tutored two day portrait drawing and painting workshop working from portrait models. This is a wonderful opportunity to spend time observing the head and creating a likeness.

On the first day we will be drawing in charcoal or pencil, looking at proportion, angles and finding planes and structure in the head. We look at drawing features and discovering particular attributes of our models head and features.

On the second day we progress the drawing into oil or acrylic paint. We will begin by transferring our drawings onto our surface, the will start with preliminary under painting, continuing with three basic tones and developing the portrait painting as the day continues, looking at tonal values and mixing skin tones. We will explore paint handling techniques including drawing with a brush and tonal painting. We will cover composition, mixing skin tones, proportion, measuring, angles in the head, and making a grid, capturing likeness, and the importance of tone.
