Course Description

We’re thrilled to announce our latest tutor Joe Webster a.k.a. ENUF who is an award-winning international landscape-graffiti artist with more than a decade of exhibitions and 15 years’ teaching expertise under his belt. This is not to be missed!

Whether you’re taking your first creative steps or are a professional artist, this workshop will support and stretch beginners and experienced artists alike. Brimming with skills and inspiration to release your creativity and lift it to the next level, this workshop will emphasise playfulness as a foundation from which your creativity flourishes.

Day one will begin with a brief presentation about Joe’s work followed by activities creating a series of small, timed studies. There will be an introduction to the foundations of drawing, observation, measurement and composition. Students will then build on these structures introducing expressive techniques and exploring the behaviour of paint in the weather; such as dilutions, mediums, drips, splashes and mark-making techniques. Participants are encouraged to put each experiment aside and focus on trying out new things, ‘playing with acrylic paint’ and enjoying the experience itself. We will then review work, discussing which pieces were the most fun to create and/or which are the most visually successful. For the remaining part of the day and day two, you will go on to work on a more involved piece (or pieces) developing and refining favourite techniques and learning how to analyse works and resolve elements to arrive at finished pieces.

If weather allows, this workshop will involve an element of plein-air, exploring the exciting and unpredictable effects of weather in paint and the challenges of working outdoors. [Please bring old, warm clothing.] Source material will be available to work from in the studio if the weather is inclement and you are also invited to bring your own printed images of landscapes as inspiration.

You will complete this class having learned a huge range of techniques from observational skills to capturing light and emotion; and from incorporating spray paint to working with weather to enhance your painting. But more importantly it will be a fun, enjoyable couple of days developing many new techniques with the emphasis that being light hearted, inquiring and playful can unlock your creativity and create a foundation for exciting, lifelong practice.

“I find many people are looking to ‘loosen up their style’ so my workshops are packed with techniques which breathe joy and freedom into your work. I equally believe that the most rewarding outcomes derive from mastering the foundations so within all the fun I embed rigorous skills to challenge participants literally as far as they want to go.”

Artist Joe Webster works plein-air juxtaposing traditional painterly techniques with modern graffiti handstyles. Describing his paintings as ‘landscape-graffiti,’ he layers pristine, bucolic scenes with industrialised, urban language. Webster examines our contemporary landscape in the context of humanities’ evolving relationship to the planet. Born Weymouth 1978, Webster grew up in north Cornwall. He studied at Falmouth College of Arts, gained his degree in Contemporary Art at Nottingham Trent University and his Postgraduate Certificate in Art from Exeter University. Webster however, jokes that he is ultimately a ‘student of the great outdoors’. Webster exhibited in Portugal in his early career and is represented by galleries in the UK and Australia. His artworks are held in private collections in 13 countries. Joe Webster works and lives in Devon, UK.
