Learning to Love Oil Painting with Gregory Mason
This is a unique invitation to start or continue your journey into oil painting under the guidance of UK Cass Art Oil Painting Ambassador and Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year Finalist, Greg Mason, in the stunning setting of Cornwall School of Art.
The day will begin with a demonstration from Greg Mason on how to start an oil painting using ‘sketch and tone’. Introducing you to a simple technique of making an underpainting with just 2 colours, Greg will quickly map out the composition and tonal values that form the foundations of good oil painting technique.
After a coffee break you will embark on your first practical painting session, laying down an under-painting using the same principles as you’ve been shown, with the support of your tutor to guide you as you go. You will be introduced to the art of composition, colour mixing and oil paint application, whilst at the same time enjoying the tranquility of The Coach House in our purpose built art studio.
After lunch Greg will give a demonstration on how to add colour to the tonal underpainting you began earlier in the day before inviting you to develop the work you began in the morning session working with an ‘extended palette’ of oil colours. Our final session is all about ‘finishing touches’, looking at ways in which to bring out the full potential of your oil painting and working towards completion. A short debrief completes the day with a chance to reflect on what you’ve learned and to identify some key principles to take away with you to build your confidence and develop your skills moving forward.
