Cosmos and Dahlia – Pen and Watercolour with Karen Green

Course Details
Course Description
Working directly from seasonal cosmos and dahlia flowers, botanical artist Karen Green will guide you through observational drawing, pen work, and watercolour techniques to create a finished illustration that combines botanical accuracy with the natural beauty of your subject.
The workshop begins with relaxed, playful drawing exercises before moving into a brief exploration of flower structure. Karen will then support you in developing a detailed observational drawing, using pen and stippling techniques to build depth and shadow. With one-to-one guidance and demonstrations, you’ll also explore watercolour methods and precise colour mixing to bring your chosen flower to life.
Throughout the session, you’ll become familiar with the tools and materials used in botanical art, gradually building layers of paint to achieve luminosity and depth in your work.

KAREN GREEN
Painting professionally for nearly 20 years, Karen Green has exhibited in solo and shared exhibitions in Bristol, Stroud and Cheltenham. Her studio, just outside Stroud, is opened regularly to visitors with the annual SITE Open Studios Festival. She began teaching seven years ago, across Gloucestershire, including regular workshops at Pegasus Art, for whom she has written several articles on painting botanically. She loves sharing her passion for plants and flowers; how we as humans are interwoven with the natural world, through medicine, folklore, religion and symbolism. Working from the fundamentals of the science and techniques of botanical illustration, Karen is currently exploring the themes of motherhood, fertility and the language of flowers to create her watercolour paintings. Karen's painting Botanical Womb was used on the front cover of a book by Leo Kalovynas 'Mother of Zero Children' exploring the pressure on Greek women to have children. Her artwork featured in November 2020 edition of Period Living magazine.
