Botanical Leaf and Flower Painting with Billy Showell

Course Description

We are delighted to have internationally renowned botanical artist Billy Showell back with us again in July!

Gain a deeper insight into the inspiring world of botanical watercolour and learn the methods used by a professional, studying flowers picked straight out of our gardens! Botanical painting requires a level of observation and drawing skill to capture the true essence and form of a plant. Billy will show you how to deepen your knowledge of flower structure and learn ‘how to see’ using drawing and perspective. A master of the wet-on-wet watercolour technique—the process of applying fresh paint onto a wet surface—she’ll share her love and understanding of watercolour techniques, and through demonstrations, will show you her methods of washing, lifting, and re-washing to create velvety smooth leaves and petals, and how she magically firms up the subject’s intricate details and edges using a dry brush technique. You will learn how to master some lovely ways to capture the beauty and detail of a flower through varied tone, focusing on capturing the intricacies of the seasonal flower chosen. Through one-on-one instruction from Billy, you’ll hone your skills as you build an elegant composition and bring flower subjects to life on paper. Billy is with us for two back-to-back workshops which will tackle different themes and techniques so can be booked together.

Some experience of watercolour is preferable for this course.

Billy’s works are distinguishable by her striking, fluid and sometimes unusual compositions; she has won various botanical awards, an RHS SGM, 7 SBA Certificates of Botanical Merit and a Gold Medal from the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society as well as many awards for ‘People’s Choice’. Billy’s work is held at Kew Botanic gardens, the Hunt Institute USA and one in the Shirley Sherwood collection; her work is also held in many private collectors worldwide. Billy has also created over 100 species illustrations for the International Fragrance Federation and has painted many illustrations for commercial food companies.

In late 2018 Billy became the President of the Society of Botanical Artists and remained in the role until September 2021. Alongside Billy’s painting and illustrating, she is also a prolific teacher. Teaching at her studio and regularly across the UK as well as America, Russia and Australia and many more. Passionate about sharing her tips and skills, Billy has produced four best-selling books on her painting style.
