Course Description

PLEASE NOTE, THIS WORKSHOP CAN BE BOOKED WITH TONY’S OTHER WORKSHOP AS IT WILL FOCUS ON DIFFERENT SUBJECT MATTER.

Tony will share his approach to landscape and seascape painting, using reference materials and sketches to introduce fresh colour and a painterly style. The goal is to break free from the restraints of perfection and capture the essence of the subject with lively, energetic brushwork and mark-making, inspired by alla prima, to help express mood and atmosphere. He’ll share techniques from his own personal artistic practice, where colour and light play a crucial role, and you’ll experiment with complementary and harmonious colours to elevate your work and unlock your creative confidence. The aim will be to cover a number of subjects and techniques including landscape, marine, perspective, composition, reflection, to capture the atmosphere of the world around us.

Day 1 will start with an introduction and an overview of Tony’s artistic journey. Students will explore the entire process of painting, from initial concepts and thumbnails to value sketches and colour studies, leading up to a finished painting. You will work with your own or supplied reference materials, and students will tackle challenges like limited palette, one-stroke painting, and timed exercises. Day 2 will feature another demonstration, focusing on a looser, more relaxed style. You’ll have time to apply the techniques learned and receive one-on-one feedback as you continue working.

This workshop is about experimenting, having fun, and finding your unique artistic voice.
