A sense of place – Catching the Moment in Pen and Wash, Colour and Word with Sue Lewington

Course Description
This is a two-day sketchbook workshop will combine some time sketching outside in the grounds of The Coach House if weather permits, along with time in the studio. The first day Sue will start with a chat about aims and the way you will approach recording our feelings as well as our surroundings. She will then commence with a demonstration in the studio where she will discuss planning composition and capturing the essence of the subject matter with sketching and fineliner. Sue will show you different techniques, and you will be guided through how to use watercolour to add depth and life to a study. You will then experiment with some quick drawing exercises before you set out to find a spot outside close to the studio to sketch in your sketchbooks. After lunch will be another demo, and the chance to find another spot to paint in. Sue will circulate around providing support and advice to students. Day two will follow a similar format with demo’s and outside sketchbook work (weather permitting!). Towards the end of the day, students will gather back in the studio to show work (not compulsory) and have a summing up.
This is a great time to experiment as you learn about colour mixing, wet on wet, layering, dry brush work and how to use watercolour freely in combination with pen and pencil.
You will leave the workshop with an insight into pen and wash painting, and some finished sketchbook pages.
If the weather is poor, this workshop will be studio based, sketching from photos.
