A Beginner’s Guide to Drawing, Sketching and Watercolour with Sue Lewington
Course Description
The workshop will commence with a talk and a demonstration. Sue will then guide you through different techniques, showing you how to incorporate drawing, whilst giving tips on planning your composition. This is a great time to experiment as you learn about colour mixing, wet on wet, layering, dry brush work and how to use watercolour freely in combination with pen and pencil.
You will leave the workshop with an insight into watercolour painting, some finished sketchbook pages, or a finished painting.

Useful Links
- Your usual watercolour kit with a selection of watercolour paints – any colours that appeal to you. (A Winsor & Newton set or individual tubes are fine)
- An A4 or A5 watercolour pad
- A selection of watercolour brushes – Size 8 and 10 are useful (Sue uses round brushes series 101 from Pro Arte.)
- Mixing palette
- Pencils
- Uni pin or similar fineliner drawing pen 0.1 or 0.2 size
Sue will bring some materials for you to use on the day and the materials listed below will also be available to borrow.

Sue has taught drawing, painting and book making classes for many years as well as publishing sketchbooks and exhibiting her work.
Find Out MoreOur courses usually begin at 10am and end at 4:30pm, with a half an hour lunch break at around 1pm. There will also be brief morning and afternoon breaks, with free tea and coffee available in the kitchen area. At Lunch time you can make things nice and easy by pre-ordering a freshly prepared Coach House Lunch. Alternatively, you’re very welcome to bring along a packed lunch and any other refreshments you like.
On sunny days students and tutors are invited to enjoy breaktimes outside in the leafy courtyard or gardens surrounded by birdsong.
